Dataport was formed on January 1, 2004 through the merger of Datenzentrale Schleswig-Holstein (DZ-SH) with the State Office for Information Technology (LIT) and the Department for Information and Communication Technology of the Senate Office for District Affairs.
On January 1, 2006, the states of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (only with the tax administration) and Bremen joined Dataport. On January 1, 2010, Lower Saxony also became a Dataport member state and has had its tax administration managed by Dataport since then.
On January 1, 2012, the municipalities of Schleswig-Holstein also became Dataport sponsors via their IT association Schleswig-Holstein. This was followed in February 2014 by Saxony-Anhalt joining the Dataport State Treaty with retroactive effect from January 1, 2013.
